PC Protection
brought to you by PC Alamode Magazine |
| Ever since viruses have been a problem to computer users,
there was the comfort that a file containing a virus had to be executed
to infect a system. That program might be hidden in another program, but
it had to "run" to do its damage. Using an program that could detect that
type of virus was the solution, as long as the virus signature list was
updated regularly (read monthly at a minimum). Well, all good things have
to come to an end and this comfort did in January of 1995 with the introduction
of Microsoft Word for Windows Version 6.0 and the MS Word MACRO Viruses.
The following two articles discuss this new type of virus, the "strains" that have come out and how to protect against it. The first is from an article written in the March 1996 issue of "intercom".
Word macro virus revisited
The second article came via the Internet by electronic mail. Like many
viruses, this one may never get out into the "public", but was provided
(this is not always as overt nor is the outcome as benign) to an antivirus
vendor, who works it into their overall protection as an actual virus or
through their heuristic protection scheme.
